Devlog #5: New Biome Coming Soon! Concept Art Inside

Hello again,

This week we’re working to have the new biome and the next hour of gameplay ready as soon as possible.

On one hand, we’ve started exploring new concept art for the second biome, as well as the new mechanics and enemies we’ll be adding. It was very important for us to create a strong impact with this aesthetic change: we’re coming from the Scrapyard, with its blue, gray, and green tones (cold, desperate, and oppressive) and now the idea is to move into more colorful lands, where the adventure begins to open up and Kenzu discovers new cultures and new threats.

Starting with the second biome, the Forest, the adventure expands, and this new area becomes the gateway to many others. This new sense of movement and exploration will be reflected not only in the art and narrative, but also in a new mechanic that we hope you’ll enjoy!

The description of this biome was inspired by the narrative, which presents it as the point of connection between several Kato clans: the deep-dwelling Kúmmel, the high-altitude Kutara gardeners, and the Qutobi temples to the west. Here you’ll find the remains of a once vibrant and interconnected culture that is now stuck and abandoned.

We started out with a moodboard. We do one for every biome. For this one, our inspirations were rainforests with rich, deep colors, mixing darkness and light, cool and warm colors, symbolizing decay and life.

Artistically, our inspiration comes from impressionist painters like Monet, who captured the beauty of nature in its chaotic and expressive form, and masters of color like Odilion Redon.

Based on that, the first concepts and assets are being developed for the Forest's environment and inhabitants.

Room design (spoilers ahead)

In parallel, we laid out the room sequence and decided where eachkey moment should go. We're now creating these rooms in Unity, setting up all the confiners and cameras, and then we'll do a first iteration of tilemaps, platforms and enemies, which will continue evolving in the next few iterations.

This area with it's rough art assets will be deployed on ich.io this Friday so stay tuned!!

Until next time!
